TRAFFIC SURVEY RESULTS

Earlier today I joined some of the Parish Councillors to collect traffic data at the junction of Ryleys Lane and Wilmslow Road. The purpose of the survey was to record how many vehicles were diverted through the village as a result of the temporary closure of Chorley Hall Lane.

Vehicles were recorded as follows:
- total no. of vehicles 399
- average no. of vehicles per hour 89
- total no. of cars 336
- total no. of vans 47
- total no. of lorries 15
- total no. of cycles 1

The assessment carried out by CE Highways earlier in the year, found an average number of vehicle movements at the same times of day (9.30am-2.00pm) to be 85 per hour, which means that all the vehicles recorded today were either there as a result of the road closure, or some of the vehicles affected by the road closure chose an alternative route to access Chelford Rd (e.g. via Nether Alderley).

Next Monday, we will be repeating the exercise to establish how many vehicles use this route when Chorley Hall Lane is open as usual. If anyone is able to help for an hour between 10am and 2pm, please let me know.

  1. why wasn't this done during rush hour? people commuting too and from work and the school drop off/ pick up? completely pointless doing this when 99% of people are at work or kids at school!

    1. Hi Rory,
Ideally, we would have liked to have done the survey during rush hour; however, Chorley Hall Lane wasn't closed until 9.30am and was open again by 3pm, so carrying out the survey outside of these times would not have told us anything.
Next Monday, we plan to repeat the assessment between the same times, with Chorley Hall Lane open. This will tell us what the percentage increase in traffic is, as a direct result of the closure.
As we already know how many vehicles travel along CHL during rush hour (from the assessment carried out be CE Highways earlier in the year), we can apply the same percentage and that will give an indication of the likely impact at rush hour.
I would also ask you to remember that we are all volunteers and we are reliant on the help of other volunteers from the community to carry out the survey.
      Kind regards,
      Craig

  2. Hi Craig,

Fully aware that you are all volunteers and fully appreciative you are doing a tough task. Could you direct me to where the figures are published of the assessment carried out by CE Highways earlier in the year.

I'm simply trying to understand how far the traffic is going to be backed up down Ryleys lane. Thus giving me an estimate of how much longer it will take to travel too work and home (once the way one way is put into place).

    Many thanks in advance.

    1. Hi Rory,

Yes, of course, they were published to this blog: http://cllrcraigbrowne.blogspot.co.uk/2017/04/chl-traffic-assessment-results.html

If you click on the two images, they will enlarge and be easier to read. One record the eastbound traffic and the other, westbound.

      Kind regards,
      Craig
